Psalm 121
A Song of degrees.
Scripture (KJV)
1I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help.
2My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth.
3He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber.
4Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.
5The Lord is thy keeper: the Lord is thy shade upon thy right hand.
6The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night.
7The Lord shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul.
8The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.
Summary
Psalm 121 is the second of the Songs of Ascents and one of the most beloved psalms of trust. The pilgrim lifts his eyes to the hills—perhaps wondering where help will come from—and immediately answers: “My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth.” The remainder of the psalm is a cascade of reassurance about God as Keeper. Unlike human guardians, He will not slumber or sleep. He is shade at the right hand, protection from sun and moon by day and night, the preserver of the soul from all evil, and the guardian of every going out and coming in, from this time forth and forevermore.
The word “keep” (and its forms) appears six times, anchoring the psalm in the truth that the believer is never unattended. The major themes are protection, God’s constant watchfulness, pilgrimage, preservation, and eternal care. Practically, the psalm invites travelers, workers, and the anxious to entrust their comings and goings to a God who never nods off. The great lesson is that the Maker of heaven and earth is the personal Keeper of every step.
