Psalm 23 is short enough to memorize and deep enough to spend a lifetime in. A verse-by-verse walk-through reveals the careful movement of its thought.
Verse 1: "The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want." The claim is personal and the result is contentment. A sheep with a good shepherd lacks nothing essential.
Verses 2-3: Green pastures, still waters, restored soul, paths of righteousness. Provision, rest, renewal, and direction—all for His name’s sake, not ours.
Verse 4: The valley of the shadow of death. Notice: He does not avoid the valley; He leads us through it. The rod and staff—tools of defense and guidance—become comfort.
Verse 5: A table prepared in the presence of enemies. Honor, anointing, an overflowing cup. God’s provision does not wait for the enemies to leave; it comes in their sight.
Verse 6: Goodness and mercy following all the days of life, and dwelling in the Lord’s house forever. The journey ends at home.
