Finding Peace in Psalm 46
A refuge, a river, and a command to be still. How Psalm 46 teaches us the peace that holds when the world shakes.
Psalm 46 paints a picture of the world falling apart—mountains thrown into the sea, waters roaring and foaming. Into that chaos it speaks a single word: "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble." Peace, in this psalm, is not the absence of trouble but the presence of God.
The first source of peace is refuge. A refuge is a place you run to. God is not merely a comfort from a distance; He is the shelter we enter. "Therefore will not we fear," the psalmist says, even when the earth moves.
The second source is a river. While the sea rages, a quiet river gladdens the city of God. Peace comes from a hidden source—the steady, unseen supply of God’s presence in the soul.
